Description
Cefuroxime axetil is the 1-acetoxyehyl ester of Cefuroxime.
Cefuroxime is a semi synthetic analog of cephalosporin C. Cefuroxime has in vitro activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms and it is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamases of certain gram-negative bacteria. The bactericidal action of cefuroxime results form inhibition of cell-wall synthesis.
Indications
1 Upper and lower respiratory tract infections.
2 Skin and Soft Tissue Infections.
3 Urinary Tract Infection
4 Gonococcal Infection
5 Septicemia
6 Meningitis
7 Surgical prophylaxis
Contraindications
Known allergy to cephalosporins
Adverse reactions:
As with all cephalosporins, anaphylaxis is possible particularly in patients with history of allergic reactions to cephalosporins or penicillin but is rare.
Overdosage
Excessively large doses of all cephalosporins can cause cerebral irritation and may cause convulsions.
Dosage
Usual dose – 250mg to 500mg twice daily for 10days . Uncomplicated UTI – 125mg to 250mg twice daily for 10days. Uncomplicated Gonorrhoea – 1g single dose.
Use in pregnancy and lactation
Pregnancy
Pregnancy Category B
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Nursing Mothers
Because cefuroxime is excreted in human milk in low concentration, consideration should be given to discontinue nursing temporarily during treatment with cefuroxime axetil.
